The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, in collaboration with the Office of the Wife of the Governor, organized a special event to commemorate the 2025 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on June 17. The event, themed "Addressing Abuse of Older Adults in Abia State: Through Data and Action," aimed to raise awareness about the various forms of abuse faced by older persons.
The commemoration began with a powerful advocacy walk, where participants from diverse backgrounds demonstrated their solidarity against elder abuse. This walk underscored the state's commitment to protecting its senior citizens and highlighting the importance of addressing elder abuse.
Her Excellency, Mrs. Priscilla C. Otti, emphasized the need for stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, communities, and families, to work together to protect the dignity and rights of older persons. She urged everyone to ensure that the elderly in the state live free from fear, exploitation, and abuse, and continue to contribute meaningfully to society.
The theme of the event highlights the significance of collecting accurate data on elder abuse prevalence in Abia State to inform policy development and implement targeted support programs. By working together, we can create a society where older adults are valued, respected, and protected.
