Bayelsa State, Nigeria — In a powerful demonstration of integrity and professionalism, Superintendent of Police (SP) Obi Sentome, a proud son of Bayelsa State, has been honoured by the Inspector General of Police with a prestigious Award for Integrity after courageously rejecting a $17,000 bribe.

The commendation, which has resonated across the country, comes at a time when public trust in institutions is often eroded by stories of corruption. SP Sentome’s action is a compelling reminder that honour and accountability still reside within the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking on the recognition, Perekeme Fidelis Perekeme Jnr, an advocate for good governance and humanitarian work, praised the officer’s courage and used the opportunity to call for official recognition at the state level.

“This noble act deserves more than a federal commendation. I passionately call on His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri, and all patriotic Bayelsans—both at home and in the diaspora—to rally behind this son of the soil. His action has not only brought pride to Bayelsa but has also restored confidence in public service,” said Perekeme.

He further urged the Bayelsa State Government to take a cue from Abia State, where a customs officer was recently honoured for turning down a bribe from a suspected ritualist.

“Recognizing men of integrity like SP Obi Sentome is not just an applause—it is a call to institutionalize accountability. We must create a culture where good deeds are not ignored but boldly celebrated,” he added.

SP Sentome’s story has since gained traction as a symbol of hope, inspiring calls from civic groups and citizens alike for greater support for public servants who uphold ethical standards under pressure.

The call for recognition continues to grow, as the Coalition of Epie Atissa Leaders (CEAL) and other voices from across Nigeria urge leaders to honour those who serve with honesty, bravery, and selflessness.
