The Opobo Kingdom is in mourning following the passing of His Majesty, King (Dr.) Dandeson Douglas Jaja, Jeki V, the Amanyanabo and Natural Ruler of Opobo, after a brief illness.

The revered monarch reportedly passed away peacefully at the age of 83, bringing to a close a remarkable life of royal stewardship, public service, and cultural guardianship.

King Jaja ascended the throne on January 3, 2004, continuing the historic legacy of the legendary King Jaja of Opobo, his direct ancestor and one of the most iconic figures in Nigerian history.
For over two decades, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja served as a stabilizing force in the Niger Delta, known for his wisdom, humility, and deep commitment to both tradition and progress.

Born into royalty and legacy, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja was not only a traditional ruler but also an accomplished scholar and statesman. He held a doctorate degree and brought decades of experience in law and administration into his role as Amanyanabo.

His reign was marked by a renewed sense of cultural pride within Opobo, active engagement in regional development, and firm advocacy for environmental justice in the oil-rich but often-neglected Niger Delta.

He was also a former Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, and earned national recognition for his role in promoting peace, education, and inter-communal unity.

King Jaja’s leadership bridged the gap between the old and new, symbolizing both historical continuity and modern relevance. His presence was commanding yet approachable, earning him respect not only among his people but throughout Nigeria’s traditional institutions.

As official tributes begin to pour in from across the nation, the Opobo Kingdom prepares to honor a life well lived and a reign that will be remembered for its dignity, vision, and unshakable devotion to the people.

May His Majesty’s soul rest in perfect peace.
Long live the Kingdom of Opobo.
