Abia Government Condemns Ikpeazu’s Illegal Political Gathering, Warns Against Early Campaigns.

The Abia State Government has raised alarm over what it described as an illegal and provocative political gathering recently convened by former Governor Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu at his Umuobiakwa residence in Obingwa Local Government Area.

In an official statement released by the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the government strongly condemned the assembly, which featured Dr. Ikpeazu’s former aides, political allies, and some members of the public. The government described the meeting as a premature political campaign that violated both the Nigerian Constitution and the guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the statement, while the former governor refrained from openly declaring any political ambition, his clear instruction to supporters to “deliver their booths and units” ahead of future elections amounted to an unlawful campaign declaration. Even more alarming was a veiled reference he made to election manipulation, which the government called “irresponsible,” especially coming from a former leader who had previously lost a senatorial bid in 2023.

While acknowledging Dr. Ikpeazu’s constitutional right to freedom of speech and association, the government reminded all political actors that such rights must be exercised within the limits of the law. The administration described the gathering as “a platform for misinformation and incitement,” warning that such behavior could destabilize the peace currently enjoyed by Abians.

“It is unfortunate that a former Governor would resort to such unbecoming conduct, launching unprovoked attacks against the current administration and attempting to incite political tension in the state,” the statement read.

The Alex Otti-led government emphasized its commitment to peace, security, and democratic principles. It urged Abians to remain law-abiding and not be distracted by those it described as “political spent forces who had their opportunity to build but failed the state.”

Reiterating its stance, the government warned that the ban on political campaigns remains in force and any violations would be met with appropriate legal consequences.

“We are rebuilding Abia from the ruins of the past and will not tolerate acts aimed at dragging the state back into the era of impunity. This is a final warning to all individuals or groups who may be tempted to flout the laws of the land,” the statement concluded.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights of citizens while ensuring that Abia remains stable, secure, and governed by law and order.
